One Day in our Initiative ~ May 2008 For whatever spiritual being might be guiding us, any given day might be a bit frustrating. The group of around 40 young people are scattered across the (mostly) north-eastern United States. There's no central office, we're not even in constant contact. We spend most of our day working and socializing like normal people and only a small part of it hoping, meeting, reading, and scheming about Think OutWord stuff. We definitely don't have much time to mull over the details. We email at work when the boss isn't around. We spend a couple hours before sleep trying to plan a benefit dinner. On the weekend we have to decide between volleyball and reading Philosophy of Freedom for an upcoming intensive (we usually end up playing volleyball). And we get up way too early to write a faux diary entry for our friends at the Goetheanum on the day that it's due. Still, collectively we've found some good ideas and these ideas have started to seep into our everyday, making us question what we see around us, what we hear on the news, how we act at our jobs or at home. In terms of understanding we've only just scratched the surface though—just caught a glimpse of what a healthy society could look like, a healthy economy, right relationships to money, our work, politics, our inner lives. But that's pretty exciting. All of a sudden so many senseless social phenomena begin to make sense and we can begin to think constructively about how to work in the world. Think OutWord is a peer-led training in Social Threefolding for young people with little money and busy lives What is your motivation? People who do good work but can't make a living Main focus: Imagining what the social organism would look like if it were actually healthy and finding ways to bring it about Result: Bringing young people together for training sessions, weekend intensives, and independent projects. Consciously transforming the work we do in the world to become truly effective agents for social health. Sarah Hearn, Peter Buckbee, and Seth Jordan are the co-founders. Everyone involved is a co-worker. Seth Jordan seththomasjordan@gmail.com
Youth Section World Day Diary
One day in our initiative:
We're not grounded in a specific place. We're not all together living under one roof and working with the same teachers. Instead we try to ground ourselves in healthy ideas and plant ourselves in each other, in a shared experience of working out in the world on our lonely fronts but backed by a community of peers who we care deeply for. At least that's what I'm hoping the rest of the group is experiencing.
